CodyCross helper

Use horizontal patterns and highlighted positions to narrow the vertical word.

Your puzzle

One line: pattern | highlighted position | candidate, candidate (optional). Example: C.. | 2 | CAT, CAR.

One letter or dot per row. Leave blank if all letters are unknown.

Separate alternatives with commas. These replace the local dictionary for the vertical word.

Dictionary and candidate scope

The local dictionary is independent of the publisher's accepted list. Names, phrases and short words may need a list you enter.

Used only when Words I enter is selected. Separate 1–48-letter words with spaces or new lines; up to 2,000 words.

The example illustrates the helper; it is not a publisher's daily puzzle.

How the CodyCross helper works

Work through one entered CodyCross puzzle. Compare horizontal candidates, transfer their highlighted letters into the vertical pattern and use the vertical candidates to narrow each row in return.

Results use the puzzle you enter; they are not verified daily answers. Your entries stay out of public URLs.

Transfer only the highlighted position

If a row pattern CA. has candidates CAT and CAR and highlights position 1, both contribute C. The final letter remains ambiguous, but the vertical C is supported by either option. Highlighting position 3 would instead leave T or R.

Use the vertical answer in both directions

A possible vertical word must choose a letter supplied by every row. Once only a few vertical words remain, their letters can remove horizontal candidates. These are spelling constraints; the clue and map theme still decide which surviving words are intended.
