Acceptance of terms
By using FiveLetterWords, you agree to these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
Description of service
FiveLetterWords is a site for solving, practicing and analyzing five-letter word puzzles. It includes word-list tools and strategy comparisons based partly on information theory. The service is provided for educational and entertainment purposes.
It is free to use and there is no subscription. It is paid for by advertising, which is described in the next section and in the Privacy Policy.
Advertising
The service is ad-supported. Advertising is sold and served through a third-party advertising network, and the ads shown on a page are selected by that network and its partners rather than by FiveLetterWords.
FiveLetterWords does not write, review or endorse the ads it displays, and it does not control the sites an ad links to. Any dealing you have with an advertiser, including a purchase, is between you and that advertiser. To the extent permitted by law, FiveLetterWords is not liable for the content or accuracy of an advertisement, for the content or practices of a linked destination, or for any loss arising from a transaction with an advertiser.
Advertising is delivered by the network into slots on the page and is not part of the site's own content. If an advertisement presents itself as something FiveLetterWords wrote, or is otherwise disruptive or inappropriate, report it to [email protected] so it can be passed to the network.
The advertising pays for the site's hosting and computation. Blocking ads does not lock you out of any feature, but interfering with how advertising is delivered or counted is a breach of these terms, as set out under User conduct.
No affiliation
FiveLetterWords is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to The New York Times Company or Wordle.
All trademarks, service marks, and trade names referenced belong to their respective owners.
Intended use
This tool is intended for:
- Learning about information theory and its applications
- Analyzing word-puzzle strategies
- Practicing puzzle-solving skills
- Exploring the site's Wordle guess and possible-answer lists
We encourage using the tool to learn, not to undermine the enjoyment of word puzzle games.
User conduct
You agree not to:
- Use the service to violate applicable laws or regulations.
- Interfere with or disrupt the service.
- Use automated systems in a way that imposes an unreasonable load on the service.
- Reverse-engineer the service except where applicable law permits it.
- Generate artificial advertising impressions or clicks, whether by script, bot, click exchange, paid traffic scheme, repeated manual clicking, or by asking others to click ads.
- Tamper with how advertising is delivered, measured or attributed, including modifying, relabeling, hiding, overlaying, reordering or reselling the ad slots, or injecting your own ads into the pages the service serves to other people.
Using an ad blocker for your own browsing is not covered by these prohibitions. What they forbid is manufacturing traffic that is not real, and interfering with the advertising other visitors are served. Both put the site's advertising account at risk, so traffic doing either may be rate-limited or blocked.
Voluntary research contributions
If you explicitly submit a minimized game record to the Wordle Observatory, you allow FiveLetterWords to combine that record into public statistics and aggregate research downloads. Do not submit a game unless it is your own result and you understand the fields listed beside the contribution control. Participation is optional, and the per-game withdrawal control is described in the Privacy Policy.
Intellectual property
Except for third-party material identified on the Licenses page, FiveLetterWords and its original content are proprietary.
The word lists are assembled from public sources and are not claimed as proprietary to this project. Their sources and scope are listed on the data page.
Changes to service
The service may be changed, suspended or discontinued without notice. To the extent permitted by law, FiveLetterWords is not liable for resulting unavailability.
Changes to terms
These terms may be updated. The date at the top of this page will change when they do. Continuing to use the service after an update means you accept the revised terms.
Disclaimer of warranties
The service is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent permitted by law, FiveLetterWords makes no express or implied warranty that the service will:
- Be fit for a particular purpose.
- Produce accurate or reliable results in every case.
- Remain uninterrupted or error-free.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, the owner of FiveLetterWords is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages arising from use of the service. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, except where mandatory consumer law in your country provides otherwise.
