What this band means

Every word on this page scores at least 4 on the Zipf scale, which means it appears ten or more times in every million words of running English. The scale is logarithmic, so the band's interior stretches much further than its floor suggests: ABOUT, the highest-scoring five-letter word here, shows up several times on a single page of a paperback, while a word at the floor, like CIVIC or ACUTE, appears about once per typical novel. The scores come from the wordfreq project, which averages books, news, subtitles and web text; they describe written and spoken English generally, not this site's puzzles.

In human terms, this band is the vocabulary you produce without thinking. Speak something like fifteen thousand words a day — around five million words a year — and arithmetic on the floor rate says a word at Zipf 4 would pass your lips or your ears about once a week, while a word in the band's upper half would come up every day. WORLD, HOUSE, MUSIC and HEART all sit comfortably inside that everyday hum.

The band matters for Wordle for a recorded reason: 638 of these 1,055 words have already appeared as answers in this site's history — by far the largest share of any frequency band. That is a fact about past puzzles, not a prediction about future ones. Still, it supports a plain habit: when you are torn between a word you would actually say and one you half-remember from a word list, the everyday word has the better track record.

Each entry below shows the word's Zipf score translated into a plain rate, a short sourced definition, a learner level where the CEFR-J wordlist records one, and its recorded answer history. The list ranks all 1,055 words from most to least frequent; scores are measured over the site's accepted-guess list of 14,855 words, not English at large.

All 1,055 words, Zipf 4 and above

Each word links to its full page. The Zipf figure is the word's corpus frequency turned into a plain rate; definitions are selected and lightly formatted from Wiktionary contributors (CC BY-SA 4.0), and long entries may be shortened. A “past Wordle answer” line means the word appears in this site's recorded answer history; its solver-pressure figure ranks that recorded puzzle against all other recorded puzzles for a reference solver, so 70/100 reads “harder than 70% of them.” CEFR chips (A1–B2) estimate when English learners typically meet a word.

How these scores are measured

Frequency scores come from the wordfreq project (data CC BY-SA 4.0), which averages word rates across books, subtitles, news and web text. A Zipf score is the base-10 logarithm of a word's uses per billion words, so each whole point is a tenfold change in frequency: Zipf 4 is ten uses per million words, Zipf 3 is one. The four bands split the site's accepted-guess list of 14,855 five-letter words at Zipf 4, 3 and 2 — round thresholds chosen from the observed distribution, not judgments about individual words.

“Past Wordle answer” claims come only from this site's recorded answer history, and the working answer pool never predicts what the NYT will choose. Solver-pressure figures are percentiles among recorded puzzles for a reference solver — a claim about those puzzles, not about players. Learner levels: The CEFR-J Wordlist Version 1.5. Common questions

What are the most common five letter words?
Measured by corpus frequency (the wordfreq project), the ten most common five-letter words are ABOUT, THEIR, THERE, WHICH, WOULD, OTHER, AFTER, FIRST, THINK and COULD. Each appears hundreds of times per million words of running English.
How many five letter words count as common?
1,055 of the 14,855 five-letter words in this site's accepted-guess list score Zipf 4 or higher — ten or more appearances per million words of English.
Are the most common five letter words good Wordle guesses?
Not automatically. Frequency measures how often a word appears in text, not how well its letters split the remaining answers, so a very common word can still be a weak opener. Frequency is most useful when choosing between final candidates: words people actually use dominate this site's recorded answer history.
