How Many Wordle Answers Have Been Used?

The current count: 1,906 completed puzzle dates contain 1,883 different answer words. The difference comes from repeats. On this site's 2,374-word possible-answer list, 491 words have not appeared in the recorded archive.

Those three numbers describe different things. A puzzle date is an appearance. A distinct answer counts each spelling once. An unused possible word is a solver candidate, not a confirmed future answer.

How we tested this

We compared every worldwide-completed puzzle from 19 June 2021 to 6 September 2026 with the possible-answer list used by this site's solver. That list is a practical model, not an official New York Times schedule. Its membership and total can change when the source lists are reviewed.

The table below separates completed dates, distinct words, reused words and unseen solver candidates.

Why the totals do not match

The archive runs from 19 June 2021 to 6 September 2026. It has 1,906 dated entries but 1,883 distinct spellings because 23 words have appeared more than once.

That proves a past appearance is not a safe reason to eliminate a candidate. It does not reveal how editors choose answers, and it does not prove that every old answer will return.

What “unused” means here

The solver's possible-answer list contains 491 words that are absent from the completed archive. Treat them as candidates during a solve. Do not treat them as leaks, promises or a countdown to future answers.

Use the right number for the question

1. Studying calendar history? Use 1,906 completed puzzle appearances.
2. Studying vocabulary or letter shapes? Use 1,883 distinct spellings so repeats do not get extra weight.
3. Solving today's board? Keep the 491 unseen possible-list words, but do not automatically remove past answers.
